Hampton University alumna wins 7-Eleven franchise

After a national competition, Hampton University alumna Alyson Rae Lawson has won a 7-Eleven franchise to call her own.

Lawson, of Dallas, Texas, was one of three finalists in the convenience store chain's first franchise giveaway contest targeted exclusively to women entrepreneurs. She graduated from HU with a bachelor's degree in business management in 2010, and has two business-related master's degrees from other institutions.

Each finalist won the waiver of the franchise fee, which is valued at up to $190,000. Evelyn Scott of Chesapeake and Avalon Young of Castle Rock, Colo., also each won the prize. According to a news release from 7-Eleven, each winner has indicated they hope to select locations near where they currently live.

"It has been a long journey, and a rewarding one," Lawson said in the release. "I'm glad to come to the finish line and seeing not only was I a winner, but all the women were victorious."

The contest also will award $10,000 to a charity of the winner's choosing. Lawson selected the Lance A. Lemons Memorial Foundation, Scott chose Oscar Smith Middle School in Chesapeake, and Young selected the Montessori Educational Foundation.
