Unique Pizza and Subs announced last week it is creating a pizza sauce infused with cannabis extracts to sell in U.S. states that have legalized edible marijuana products for medical or recreational use. In a news release, the company said it is working with "marijuana infusion chefs" in Colorado to make the sauces.
The pizza chain, which was founded in 1991 and formerly known as Coastal Services Group, is also looking into pre-made frozen pizzas made with marijuana-infused sauce.
"When I started to develop Unique Pizza 20 plus years ago, my main objective was to sustain an industry leading superior product," said James Vowler, Unique Pizza and Subs President & CEO, in a statement. "My second objective was to always lead the pizza industry with new creative ideas and concepts. With the development of our signature line of exceptional quality frozen pizzas and the cannabis-infused custom sauce, we will continue to lead our industry in innovative product design." Once the sauce is developed, Unique Pizza and Subs said it plans to provide a "proprietary base sauce to licensed marijuana infused product manufacturers in each state to locally manufacture the finished cannabis-infused sauce." Unique Pizza and Subs isn't the only company selling marijuana-laced dishes. Vancouver-based Mega iLL allows customers who have a cannabis card to add marijuana to their pizza for an additional $10, according to The Los Angeles Times. Hapa Sushi in Colorado offers food-and-weed pairings, The Huffington Post reports.
