Bookkeeping Express Franchise Opens In Hampton Roads

Saturday, March 01, 2014

A Suffolk man is parlaying his Air Force experience into his own franchise business.

Anthony Jernigan is the new owner of the only BookKeeping Express franchise in Hampton Roads. Working mostly with small businesses, BookKeeping Express handles the paperwork so business owners can get back to doing what they do best.

"They didn't go into business to spend time doing their books," Jernigan said. "They went into business, because it's something they like to do and it's their passion."

Jernigan is a Mississippi native and signed up for the Air Force in 1984, while he was still in high school. He was excited by the opportunities the military offered, he said.

He filled budget analyst and other number-crunching positions for the Air Force in a number of different areas, from North Carolina and Louisiana to Japan and Germany.

"Dealing with numbers and bookkeeping-type stuff is all I've done," Jernigan said.

He retired in 2008 after more than 23 years of active duty. He then spent more than five years as a civilian employee of the Department of Defense in the same capacity as when he was active duty.

But he decided recently he wanted to settle down. He landed in Suffolk after being stationed at Langley Air Force Base for his last duty station. His wife is from Newport News originally, which influenced the decision to stay in the Hampton Roads area.

"I've always had the desire to own my own business," Jernigan said. "You see all the stories out there about people starting home-based businesses."

Last year, he went to a local networking event and, as if by providence, the first person he met there was a representative from BookKeeping Express. It didn't take long for him to get his franchise set up.

"It seemed like it was right down the alley I was looking for," he said.

The franchise is available to serve all kinds of businesses and industries. It handles day-to-day bookkeeping, payroll, data entry, accounts payable and accounts receivable, bill paying and other paperwork. Jernigan does not do taxes but is able to get all the papers prepared for a tax accountant.

"We want to help the business owner relieve that pressure, so to speak," he said. "We have three primary goals "" help them reduce their tax liability, better manage their cash flow and help them increase their profits."

Jernigan said he tailors his services to each business.

"It's not just a cookie-cutter approach that we use," he said.
