Spot said this week it had hired the law firm Harris Beach LLP to work on its New York state franchise licensing paperwork, and that it plans to start the move into franchises with four of its existing locations, including the East Avenue Spot site in Rochester.
According to Spot, it intends to run and maintain ownership of three Buffalo-area and Toronto sites and use them for manager training and new menu item testing. Spot also will keep its majority ownership stake in three other sites across upstate New York and two Florida sites.
According to Spot, it is moving to a franchise model because that "will accelerate the development of new cafs as well as build and grow the Spot Coffee brand ... with comparatively lower operating costs than those associated with the management of corporate owned cafs." According to Spot, it expects to get its state franchise license and begin its franchise program within the next four to six months.
