Bundt Cake Franchise Opens In Naperville

Monday, August 19, 2013

Nothing Bundt Cakes, a bakery and gift shop chain serving up high-end bundt cakes, recently opened its second Illinois location in southwest Naperville.

Owner Neepa Mehta decided to open shop of her own after frequenting a Nothing Bundt Cakes store in Texas.

"I fell in love with it, the moment I walked into the store," Mehta said. "Then, I bought some cakes and I was amazed by how good they were. They are really moist and flavorful. They taste like something you make at home because we make them all in-house." Cakes, from bite- to full-sized, are made fresh daily using ingredients like eggs, butter and sour cream. Nine flavors chocolate chocolate chip, pecan praline, lemon, white white chocolate, white chocolate raspberry, marble, red velvet, carrot and cinnamon swirl are always available, with seasonal cake flavors changing monthly or bi-monthly. This month's special flavor is white chocolate blueberry. A pumpkin spice cake will be in the mix this fall and in December, a gingerbread cake will be offered.

Bite-sized bundtinis sell by the dozen for $18.75; bundlets, about the size of a large cupcake, sell for $3.99 in single servings; eight-inch cakes serving eight people sell for $21; and 10-inch cakes serving 18 sell for $31. A 10-inch cake and eight-inch cake also can be tiered to serve a larger crowd.

The business was started in 1997 in Las Vegas by two women who crafted the bundt cake recipes in their home kitchens. The company franchised in 2006 and has been adding about 20 new stores a year for a total of 69 around the country, said Donnie Robertson, director of marketing for the business. The first Nothing Bundt Cakes store in Illinois opened earlier this year in Wheaton and another store in the Skokie/Evanston area is in the works.

"The Chicago area has been really exciting for us," Robertson said. "Given the food culture, we thought the area would be perfect for us." Besides cakes, the store also operates as a gift shop, offering sentiments and decorations like hand-cut bows, silk flowers and gift tags to reflect anniversaries, birthdays, business milestones and other celebrations. Bundtlet towers of two or three cakes wrapped in cellophane also are sold as gifts. And in its "bundtique," the store sells paper party goods along with gift items like platters, picture frames, balloons and aprons. The store delivers locally.

"We're going to take care of everything," Robertson said. "I think the difference between Nothing Bundt Cakes and the cupcakeries begins with the quality. But we also offer cakes that tie into special events in people's lives, from celebrations to holidays like Thanksgiving. We're as much a cake company as a gifting company. That's different from a treat." Mehta, originally from the Chicago area, and her husband, AJ, left their jobs in Texas to open the Nothing Bundt Cakes franchise here. She said the most popular flavors are proving to be chocolate, red velvet, lemon and carrot. "We're constantly baking," she said. "Once people try it, they come back."
