Mathis formerly was president of The UPS Store network and executive vice president of franchise operations for Domino's Pizza.
Quiznos executive chairman Harsha Agadi said that Mathis' experience "uniquely qualifies him to lead this organization and move Quiznos forward. Stuart has worked with brands in times of change, and he has consistently improved their performance." Quiznos' sales and number of restaurants have declined sharply in recent years. Earlier this year, New York hedge fund Avenue Capital Group took control of the struggling chain in a debt-for-equity swap. With a $150 million equity investment from Avenue Capital, Quiznos recently rolled out a new marketing campaign focusing on higher-quality ingredients and eliminating some of the chain's value-priced menu items.
Quiznos also announced that Susan Lintonsmith was named chief marketing officer. She formerly held executive positions at Red Robin Gourmet Burgers.
MacDonald's departure was effective immediately, Quiznos said. He had served as CEO since 2010.
