"Last year we opened about 70 KFC s. This year we plan to up the ante. The opportunities in Africa are enormous," Mr Warren said.
Yum, the owners of brands including KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, is considered the world's largest fast-food restaurant company with more than 36000 restaurants in more than 110 countries. Its turnover in SA was about R8bn last year.
Mr Warren said South Africans could look forward to eating at Pizza Hut restaurants by the end of the year.
KFC said it planned to expand into seven more African countries this year. "Stores are already being built in Angola and Malawi, with KFC outlets to be added in Tanzania, Uganda, Angola, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo and Madagascar." Last year, KFC opened restaurants in Zambia, Ghana and Kenya.
"The expansion into Africa is aimed at tapping into a rising middle class market with strong economic growth potential as there is a move towards a stable, salaried job culture and away from traditional agriculture activities," Yum's GM of new African markets, Bruce Layzell, said.
By the end of this year, KFC aims to be in 20 countries throughout Africa. Part of this expansion plan was to establish successful supply chain partnerships, the company said.
