Working toward physical milestones paves the way for school success

Kids can seem to have endless amounts of energy jumping, running, skipping, tumbling. To their parents and friends, all this activity looks like kid-powered fun. But the children's gym professionals at The Little Gym know how to channel that energy and help children develop the skills and confidence that will benefit them in school and beyond.

At The Little Gym, an innovative curriculum and creative lesson plans help harness kids' energy and use it to build a foundation for school success. Proprietary songs and music introduce infants and toddlers to numbers, colors and vocabulary as they work toward age-appropriate physical milestones. Pre-school and Kindergarten age children learn to listen and follow directions from a caring adult other than a parent or caregiver. And older children learn to cooperate in a group and take on leadership roles.

Familiar games and activities develop fine and gross motor skills while they introduce key learning skills, according to Paul Dickison of The Little Gym International. For instance, tumbling, somersaults and handstands develop balance and self-assurance, which contributes to a child's sense of security. Obstacle courses that require crawling, hanging, and climbing promote motor planning, which is important for self control as well as many art, music, and PE situations.

"The programs at The Little Gym are designed to teach children skills sequentially. Each success builds the foundation for the next achievement," says Dickison. "Kids love to show off what they have learned, and we encourage children to practice their new skills. Repetition develops muscle memory and experiencing success again and again builds confidence, strength and endurance." The Little Gym introduces children to physical activity through a curriculum-based core program of gymnastics and other programs to promote coordination, balance, rhythm and flexibility. Children experience success at their own pace in a fun, caring and non-competitive way, while developing their listening, social and cognitive capacities.

The Little Gym's model has ranked it among the best in the industry. The company was recently named the No. 1 Birthday Party destination by Parents magazine and ranked No. 1 in the Children's Fitness category in Entrepreneur Magazine's Top Franchises List, also known as Franchise 500.
