Petro-canada Wants Your Thoughts On New Approach To Talking About Gas Prices

Tuesday, August 01, 2006

In an effort to make it easier and faster to understand what's going on at the pump, Petro-Canada today introduced Pump Talk, a series of short on-line videos designed to answer some of the most common questions about gasoline prices.

"We understand that consumers are frustrated by the unpredictable nature of gasoline prices," said Jon Hamilton, Director of Downstream Communications. "That frustration is further fueled when they go on-line looking for simple answers and instead find confusing graphics and highly-technical information on almost every website." Pump Talk is hosted by Petro-Canada employees, who help answer the following questions: Why are gasoline prices higher than they have been in the past? Why do gasoline prices go up and down so much? What factors determine the price of gasoline? How can I make the most of my gasoline dollar? "Most employees are well-versed in responding to questions about gasoline pricing because, like anyone in the oil and gas industry, they usually get grilled by friends and family at barbecues and weddings," said Hamilton. "That was the inspiration for Pump Talk. Those personal backyard responses are effective because they use plain language and common comparisons to make a point." Pump Talk can be viewed at www.petro-canada.ca/PumpTalk. A feedback page has been added to the site so that viewers can offer their opinions, suggestions and additional questions they would like answered. As well, the Pump Talk videos will be made available on YouTube for anyone who wants to link to their blogs.

"This is something new, so we're looking for any input - good or bad - that will help us improve our efforts to contribute to the ongoing public discussion on gasoline pricing," said Hamilton.
