3 On Your Side: Edible Mother's Day Bouquets

PHILADELPHIA | Monday, May 08, 2006

With Mother's Day just days away, many are looking for that perfect gift for mom. If you thought that bouquets have to be made with flowers, think again. 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan put edible bouquets to a taste test. At Rosa International Middle School in Cherry Hill, teachers tossed away the text books and put Mother's Day gifts to a taste test. Librarian Nina Kemps' was joined by her daughter and granddaughter when she was presented with a cookie bouquet from Cheryl and Company. "You almost hate to rip it," she said.

Inside the bouquet were 12 individually wrapped chocolate chip cookies attached to stems at a cost of $40. "I may not do it every year, but this would be fun to receive," said Kemps.

The cookie bouquet received an "A" for presentation and a "B" for value from Kemps.

Norma Kensinger is a grandmother and a gym teacher. The Grand Floral Fruit design from Incredibly Edible Delites was a welcome surprise. "It's neat, It's colorful, It's creative," Kensinger said.

At first the $62 price struck a sour cord for Kensinger as she said, "To me $62 is pricey for Mother's Day." But after a taste? "You know what, I would love this. My son can go ahead and spend $62 dollars on this," she said.

The final grade, "A" for everything. Jennifer Aristone has three kids at home and dozens more in her English classes. She received a bouquet of strawberries dipped in chocolate from Shari's Berries. The dozen strawberries are covered with different types of chocolate and toppings "Looks like a little bit of coconut, some almonds, some crunchies down there," Aristone said as she gazed at the bouquet.

But it didn't quite match the photo the order was based on.

"The red strawberries are not showing," she said, adding, "It's definitely delicious." Aristone gave it a "B" for presentation, but an "F" for the $75 price.

"I wouldn't pay $75 for that, although they look beautiful," she said.

The prices did not include shipping or delivery, which can vary widely depending on the bouquet's destination.

The price for the chocolate dipped strawberries should have been $85, but Shari's Berries gave 3 On Your Side a $10 discount for being a first time customer.
