For engineers, job opportunities are endless, she says
Lauron Fischer admits she has changed her mind a number of times regarding her career. Rock polisher, state legislator, architect - all dreams that have come and gone for the Beeville student. But for her current goal, all she had to do was look at the people who raised her. Her father and both grandfathers are petroleum engineers. "I just really like the possibilities in engineering," Lauron said. "If I had a degree in engineering, I could do anything or go anywhere. I'd never have to worry about having a job." Lauron, a 17-year-old senior at A.C. Jones High School in Beeville who also plays on the school's varsity tennis team, is a 2006 Caller-Times South Texas Distinguished Scholar winner in the Science category. She has a 97.5 average and is ranked first in a class of 220 students. Lauron said participating in University Interscholastic League science events drew her into the subject. "Science is a lot of fun, and it's always interesting," she said. A.C. Jones science department chair Bennie Belew said Lauron puts more effort into her work than most students. "She's an outstanding young lady," Belew said. "She goes above and beyond." Mother Laura Fischer said she always has known her daughter was intelligent, but a drive past the Bee County Courthouse when Lauron was 8 left no doubt that the girl was different. During that drive, Lauron decided the Lady Justice statue atop the courthouse needed her help. She noticed the arm of the statue, which was supposed to be upright, had shifted to a position where it was parallel to the ground. Lauron wrote a letter to county officials and was the catalyst for an effort that raised more than $30,000 to have the statue renovated. Laura Fischer said her daughter does not relent once she gets an idea in her head. "She gets her mind made up that this is the way it needs to be, and from there we just work on getting others to agree," she said. Along with tennis, Lauron makes time to play flute, oboe and saxophone for the school band. She also participates in number sense and mathematics UIL and serves in the Bee County 4-H club. Other interests include swimming, horseback riding and scuba diving. Lauron plans to major in electrical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Belew said whether she is a rock polisher or an engineer, she will be a success. "For her, the sky's the limit as far as I'm concerned," Belew said.
