Besides being the purveyor of quality coffee, sandwiches and desserts, Kevin Brennan, owner of Rockn' Joe Coffeehouse and Bistro in Cranford, is becoming an insightful resource for college students looking to start their own businesses. On Feb. 7, Brennan will speak to undergraduate students enrolled in an entrepreneurship class at Seton Hall University in South Orange, giving the students an inside glimpse at how Rockn' Joe has evolved from a local coffeehouse in Cranford to a franchise business reaching through New Jersey and beyond. "I am pleased to share any information, tips and knowledge about what it takes to become a successful small business," Brennan said. "I look forward to speaking with the students about the tricks of the trade, and the tools they need to succeed." Assistant Professor Jay Azriel, who invited Brennan to speak, said his course, "Writing a Business Plan," culminates this semester with teams of students opening and running their own coffeeshops on campus for several hours. The teams will then be graded on their revenue stream and marketing tactics. "We are excited to have Kevin Brennan speak to our class about what it takes to create your own business," said Azreil, who invited Brennan to speak after reading about Rockn' Joe in a local newspaper. "A main theme we teach our students is the best way to learn how to do something is to actually do it; Kevin is an example of that philosophy. He is an inspiring role model for our students." Brennan, an entrepreneur who capitalized on his love for rock music to create a destination in Cranford, opened Rockn' Joe in 1993. His first step was to install a professional sound system, bringing the place alive with rock hits from the 1960s on up. Brennan filled the walls with colorful rock memorabilia, such as album covers, from his vast personal collection. The centerpiece of Rockn' Joe is the coffee. Brennan knew his coffeehouse would never succeed without a signature blend that people will always prefer over the competition.
